Joe Uren - Technician

Joe Uren has now completed his three- year Apprenticeship with us and has successfully qualified as a Light Vehicle technician.

Joe lives in Slough, Berkshire and works at SGT Isuzu in Taplow, near Maidenhead. Joe dropped out of school early before completion, leaving without any high grade qualifications. He was, by his own admission, never interested in classroom learning. He was also quick to concede he felt uncomfortable when in the classroom at the Subaru Isuzu training centre.

This is what he had to say during a recent visit to his dealership:

"I began at SGT doing work experience when I was still at school. I didn't have much luck with my education and left school without any GCSEs. I was then offered an Isuzu apprenticeship at SGT. When I was told about the training I would have to do I began to worry as I struggle with my reading and writing. I spoke to my service manager about my worries, and he told me I had nothing to worry about as they don't mark you on your reading and spelling, and there would be help if I needed it.

"Then came the first day of college. I was really dreading it. But once I got into the classroom and got to know every one, I was alright. The lads in my class were very helpful towards me.

"Most of my training was based in the workshop. Before I started at SGT I had already completed a two-year course on light vehicles service and repair, but I didn't know anything about the Isuzu products. Within the first year of my training I was able to complete any service given to me, as I had worked on all of the Isuzu vehicles in the college workshop. Now my training has finished I look back on how much I've learnt. I wouldn't have learnt so much in a non-franchised garage."
